Consumers Energy Multi-Plant Governor Replacement Project

Ivyland, PA – American Governor Company (AGC) has been awarded a multi-year, multi-plant contract for the replacement of mechanical governors at eight (8) of Consumers Energy’s dam sites in Michigan. This project will include the following dam sites: Mio; Cooke; Croton; Five Channels; Foote; Loud; Rogers; and Webber dams. The award is part of a program to replace governors at the listed sites over a five year time span, with final installations and commissionings planned no later than 2023.

Consumers Energy owns 13 hydroelectric facilities along five rivers in Michigan. Built between 1906 and 1935, the hydro plants have a combined generating capacity of about 130 megawatts. The facilities are located on the Au Sable River (Mio Hydro, Alcona Hydro, Loud Hydro, Five Channels Hydro, Cooke Hydro, Foote Hydro), Grand River (Webber Hydro), Kalamazoo River (Allegan Hydro), Manistee River (Hodenpyl Hydro, Tippy Hydro), and Muskegon River (Rogers Hydro, Hardy Hydro, Croton Hydro). Operating since 1907, the Webber Hydro on the Grand River is the company’s oldest operating hydroelectric facility. The Croton Hydro on the Muskegon River was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on Aug. 16, 1979.

This governor replacement program is a result of our bid response to Consumers for the Mio & Cooke plant requests for quote. The competitive requests included a customer scope and specification, and AGC’s reply included compliance matrices and scope summary. As the other plants have very similar governor equipment, Consumers decided to expand the project into these additional plants. After a brief site review of each plant, AGC used the same level of effort to spec the additional units/plants.
